Science at St Anne’s Catholic Primary School
Science Lead: Miss Taylor

Intent

At St Anne’s, our children are scientists! Our aim is to give every child a broad and balanced Science curriculum which enables them to confidently explore and discover the world around them. We want our children to love science. We want our children to remember their science lessons in our school, and to embrace the scientific opportunities they are presented with. To achieve this, it involves exciting, practical hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity and questioning. Our intent is that these stimulating and challenging experiences help every child secure and extend their scientific skills, knowledge and vocabulary.

Implementation

At St Anne’s, Science topics are taught within each year group in accordance with the National Curriculum:

  • Topics are blocked to allow children to focus on developing their knowledge and skills and to study each topic in depth.
  • Year groups build upon the learning from prior year groups which develops depth of understanding and a progression of skills.
  • Teachers promote enjoyment and foster interest of the scientific disciplines; Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  • Children explore, question, predict, plan, carry out investigations and observations as well as conclude their findings.
  • Children present their findings and learning using science specific language, observations and diagrams.
  • Children are given a knowledge organiser at the start of each topic which details some key Science Curriculum Statement information, dates and vocabulary.
  • Children are given clear success criteria in order to achieve the learning intention and acquisition of skills for the lesson.
  • We ensure that the Working Scientifically skills are built-on and developed throughout children’s time at the school.

Impact

Both formative and summative assessment are used as a tool for assessing the impact of Science at St Anne’s. This allows for misconceptions and gaps to be addressed immediately as well as in future planning. The impact of this curriculum design will lead to continued progress over time across key stages. Children will be able to articulate their understanding of scientific concepts and be able to reason scientifically, using rich language linked to science. This is evidenced in a range of ways, including pupil voice, their work and their overwhelming enjoyment for science. Children will therefore be expected to leave St Anne’s reaching at least age related expectations for Science.
